This is a really REALLY small tutorial on how to have your map original. Im writing this because every day, i see very unoriginal maps, which makes them less fun. There are 3 parts to this tutorial; Mapping, Characters/Skills, and Theme/Story. This tutorial is for improvements, but you can read it for ideas.
Mapping
Alot of maps i see out there have very simple, unrealistic mapping. Here are some tips that will increase the realistic effect in your map.
-Random scale and random type doodads
-raising and lowering the ground level
-adding water at areas
-changing parts of the tileset
-using all of your tiles you have chosen
-putting alot of doodads, like tents, barrels, caves
-when putting trees, dont make it look blocky..put trees in the middle of the path, or some different types of trees like the next one
-and sometimes use different map terrain type doodads
Also, you can resize doodads to give a different effect, like the picture below
Character/Skills
This is another thing i dont like. Unoriginal characters or spells. I meen the least people could do is change the color tint in the char, or change its name! Here are some little hints that will spice up your characters and skills, so its not the usual paladin or death knight.
units;
-its good to download skins and models and put them on chars
-sometimes use units for heroes
-make up your OWN type of class
-dont make all of the characters melee
-resize the unit
-make different unit sound sets
spells;
-change the buttons
-maybe add a spellbook
-change the model file on the spells
-change the damage, debuff, or buff
-i cant stress this one enough, Always finish tooltips, like if your gonna use windwalk on a demon hunter, the tooltip says, 'makes the blade master invisible...' so make it say demon hunter.
-add buffs do, in the buff/debuff tab
-change the icons for buffs too
-and dont forget about auras!
Theme/Story
This one is not as important as the others iv talked about, because on most maps, there is no story...'ie dota,defiance orpg, td's...but themes are kinda important..for example, how many times have people used 'knights' and 'snipers' as themes... ALOT of people... if your makign a td, think about what others havent done.. dont just redo another td and give it diff names, but like, lets say, zombie td (its kinda cheezy i know), maybe recolor all the enemy units so their dark green or dark yellow? on rpgs, maybe set the time farther back, or closer than knights, also make somewhat of a story, not just hack and slash for hours. Give a goal, a bad guy, and you, one of the popular types of games.
thats all for now. reconsider naming your footmen, footmen, but soldiers or something...be imaginative and your map will be great!
