Esperanza High School students record memories honoring Shauna Stuewe, 14, at a tribute on the campus this morning.
ANAHEIM – A cheerleader at Esperanza High School died Wednesday after she passed out at practice following being twirled into the air by other team members, a school official said.
The girl, Shauna Stuewe, 14, is a gymnast and had often been twirled in the air by her teammates, said school spokeswoman Rosemary Gladden.
"When she came down she told her teammates she felt dizzy," Gladden said. She soon passed out and was taken to Kaiser Permanente Hospital in Anaheim. "She died of cardiac arrest," the spokeswoman said.
The incident occurred at the school at about 4:30 p.m.
Gladden said the school called a meeting Wednesday night to brief cheerleaders and their parents on what had occurred, to quell rumors and to offer counseling to those who wanted it. About 50 people attended the meeting.
Cheerleaders and other students gathered for counseling this morning. Some cheerleaders sat in a circle on the front lawn of the school, while others signed posters on the walls and fences. One sign, below red balloons, stated "Our Lil Cheerleader is Flying High."
Stuewe's parents declined to comment, their neighbor said.
Her Myspace.com profile said that Stuewe loved movies and all types of music except for country. Since her death, her site has received 14 hits from friends who shared memories, posted photos and expressed how much they missed her.
